On behalf of the California High School Speech Association, I'm excited to welcome all California middle schoolers and all California middle school speech and debate programs to the Middle School Speech and Debate State Championship Tournament! Our synchronous tournament dates are Wednesday, May 4th - Sunday May 8th, 2022. Asynchronous speech will be judged in the week leading up to our tournament with semifinal and final rounds on Saturday.

All middle school competitors in sixth through eighth grades in public or private programs will be able to compete with other outstanding students from across the state. 

1) The tournament will offer six (6) preliminary rounds of debate and three (3) preliminary rounds of speech; breaks will depend on entry but are tentatively scheduled for double octofinals for debate, semis for speech, and finals for congress. 

2) This tournament will offer all CHSSA speech events.

2a) Oratorical Interpretation, Original Oratory, Original Advocacy, Informative, Program Oral Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, and Original Prose & Poetry will be offered asynchronously. Videos should be submitted no later than Monday April 25th at 5:00PM. Submissions are now open!

2b) Extemporaneous and Impromptu will be offered as synchronous events.

2c) We may collapse or eliminate events based on enrollment so be sure to register early!

3) Debate events offered are Congress, Policy, Public Forum, Lincoln Douglas, and-- for the first time at the middle school level-- Parliamentary.

3a) Public Forum will use the NSDA April topic.

3b) Lincoln-Douglas will use the NSDA March/April topic.

3c) Teams are welcome to submit Congress legislation for consideration.

3d)Parli topic areas will be released in April.

4) High school competitors are welcomed, and encouraged, to judge.
